MISS APPROPRIATED
Miss Appropriated explores cultural appropriation and references Hawaiian hula dancers. Popularised images of female hula dancers have deviated far from their origins and perpetuated stereotypes. Mass produced dashboard hula girls became iconic retro ornaments, swaying to the movement of a vehicle in motion. This concept refers to the dilution and distortion over time of original intent, with iconography becoming popularised and less connected to its origin, resulting in misinterpretation and reinterpretation. This work both relates to a cultural era, and a cultural shift.
